Pea shingle and other decorative stones
8:45 PM on 8 June 2008

Why oh why do designers want to put pea shingle or other small stones next to grass areas? The general public see this and then copy these ideas?

Why the moan? One customer whom I do maintenance for has used some horrible stones bordering his lawns, resulting in another smashed window from my mower.

Nightmare!

Stuart

It's a shame gravel is so cheap compared to bricks, setts and paving blocks! Much better to have brick, setts or block edgings set 30 - 50mm below lawn levels but I guess amatuer gardeners see these ideas on TV programmes and copy them without appreciating that gravel can be used as long as the particle size is large enough and set well below lawn level to stop the Flymo catapult effect!!

Hi Stuart, that's nasty...when you were hoping to get paid and with the smashed window.. you probably paid him!! Have you given him a quote for laying a mowing strip??
I did a job awhile back for a designer and 5mm gravel was specified bordering a mowstrip of brick-edging. The client had to replace the gravel with 25mm gravel because when they mowed the lawn with their flymo...the gravel went everywhere! Lesson were learnt here!

John's right, good advice. Gravel and lawns don't mix. Lawns always need a good mowing edge regardless of what is next to it. Ever Edge is good, but if there is paving and edge in matching setts looks fab.

the thing is with stone & grassisto make sure you have a good edging material between the 2 materials & the stone shold always be at leats 25mm below the edging & kept like it during the course of your garden mintence

Hi Stuart. Its a valid point. I must admit I try to put soemthing between the 2. We lost a consevatory window once at home as there was a small stone on the grass ( no gravel anyway near!) I think its important to combine the beautiful with the practical.
