Owl watch
9:01 AM on 17 June 2008

We have a family of tawny owls in the woods around our cabin- it's so fantastic- i have never seen owls so close up in the wild. Most evenings you can see at least two of them- in the pine trees just above your head- some nights four or five-wow! Hopefully building a few more boxes this year will ensure they stay.

The Vegie garden is improving after a sunny spell and the addition of some organic compost and chicken pellets- things are finally taking off and I can already pick spring onions, lettuce, spinach, beans, peas and baby carrots.  Tomatoes, peppers, courgettes to follow soon hopefully. Happy days!

Hello Shelley
Owls are a rare and lovely thing to have in the garden. Fantastic eyes. Years ago I lived in a small thatched cottage with a telegraph pole + wires out the front, also had a Chinchilla cat. Don't know if you know the breed, white, fluffy, blue eyes, even if you HATED cats you would have loved Fifi, fully grown she was no more than a older kitten size.

Drifting off one night I heard an owl. Having never seen one in the wild peeked out of the small window. The magnificent owl was perched on the wires. Fifi was underneath the telegraph pole and the ****** owl was just about to take her as a snack! Obviously I had to wake the whole hamlet by screaming, to save Fifi. The owl flew off with its impressive wing span and a 'hoot'.

Fifi saved, a little while latter moved house. She was run over by a car. Think the ride with the owl would have been, for a short while, more fun!

Enjoy the owls!

Fantastic. I love owls. We put a nesting box up for owls in our barn in France and when we were there recently there were around 50 pellets on the ground beneath it so they are definitely using it for roosting- so exciting. I also have a bat detector as we have bats both here in England and in France. They are so lovely! Well done on your gardening success.
