What I Do
Member Type: Amateur Gardener
A Bit About Me: My garden is suburban, measures 7m x 22m and faces north. It is surrounded on three sides by neighbours; there is a drop beyond the hedge at the bottom of the garden so only the roofs of these houses are visible. There is no sun mid-winter; the sun starts to creep up the garden after the winter solstice. In midsummer most of the garden gets sun apart from the patio. This is where I grow my shade loving plants. Plants have to earn their keep so I choose flowers which have berries or hips; good foliage with autumn colour; plant that are good for wildlife. An example is Cotoneaster franchetti with its flowers loved by bees; berries for the blackbird and autumn colour for me. Foliage is very important as it is around for longer than flowers. I like to encourage wildlife in the garden so there are birds, bees and butterflies. The birds love the hedge and especially the overgrown privet; this is next to the shed roof where they like to sunbathe.

Thank you for your comments; if you wouldn't mind too much I'd love to follow your "average garden" blog as you've some lovely ideas there. Everything can inspire. Happy Xmas!

Hi Gill, enjoyed looking at your photos. An inspiration to everyone with an 'average' sized garden. It was interesting to see your garden plan too, with every part of the garden put to good use.

I always enjoy summer v winter shots at yours didn't disappoint!
