The KLC School of Design - gardening and design courses at Hampton Court Palace

From September 2008, KLC School of Design will be running a range of courses in the magnificent surroundings of Hampton Court Palace, where students can study for their own pleasure or to gain a recognised qualification to make a career change...

KLC School of Design - an overview
KLC School of Design is world renowned for the quality of its training in Garden Design. Our vocational courses are delivered in a professional, friendly and stimulating environment and it is our policy to use only practising professionals for all aspects of the tuition provided.

The workshop elements will take place in a private apartment within Hampton Court Palace itself with breathtaking views over the formal gardens, whilst the outdoor practical elements will be held in the tranquil 20th Century Gardens, which appropriately used to be the apprentices’ garden.

KLC School of Design - Diploma in Garden Design
• Part-time career based training in garden design for entry into the industry
• Location - Hampton Court Palace, London
• One week introduction followed by:- 2 days a week (Mon and Tues) over 3 terms (Total of 71 days)

The intensive Diploma course syllabus covers every aspect of training for the aspiring garden designer and the carefully constructed, linear programme, built around a series of varied design projects, has been designed to develop the potential of each student. The combination of lectures and practical workshops allows students to build confidence quickly by putting newly acquired skills into practice. Students are also given an insight into the many potential career opportunities that exist as well as one to one career advice.

In the early stages, students are introduced to the fundamentals of design drawing, carefully integrated with an introduction to CAD, design principles, construction and presentation techniques all set in the context of the design process as a whole. All areas are further developed as the course progresses so graduates develop their design solutions, on a sound basis, and effectively communicate their ideas to clients. Throughout the course considerable emphasis is placed on the importance of the relationship with the client.

Supporting studies, range from an exploration of the development of garden styles to the practicalities of pruning, planting and drainage. Relevant contemporary issues such as environmentally friendly design and technology are also highlighted.

The course provides an in-depth study of every aspect of planting design and is suitable for amateur gardeners and designers, as well as professional designers and gardeners who want to improve their plant and planting design knowledge. Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, design workshops and plant identification sessions, you will build up a substantial plant portfolio, allowing you to recognise and name a vast array of shrubs, trees and plants. Under the guidance of our qualified design tutors, you will learn how to maintain and care for plants and understand the requirements of different environments and conditions, particularly seeing the 20th Century Gardens change through the seasons. The course will also show you how to survey a garden and draw up a planting plan that will allow you to communicate and develop your creative ideas on paper.

At the end of the course, students will not only be prepared for the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture examination, but will have also developed a specialist skill that can help to completely transform an outside space.
