Ferring tree choppers prosecuted.

THREE people who cut down a protected tree in Ferring have been prosecuted.

Tree surgeon Steve Wadey, of Middleton-on-Sea, was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £250 costs by Worthing magistrates on Monday, June 16.

He pleaded guilty to ordering the felling of a Corsican pine tree at Beehive Lane in Ferring.

I bet it's nothing like the amount he charged for the felling though! At the end of the day it is every tree surgeon's responsibility to check with the local authority in question whether or not a tree is covered before they do any works. It is standard practice for us even though we use a sub-contractor. We check it ourselves and get written approval prior to works commencing. I think the penalty should be more for a breach in my opinion otherwise what is the incentive to others to check before they chop?
