Pointing of slabs
4:54 PM on 25 April 2008

After finishing my latest project, a new patio in Bognor Regis, I am now suffering from an achey back and sore knees. I have seen many different products for pointing of paving slabs....but which is best? The old fashioned, get on your knees and push the mortar into the gap or using one of the many jointing mortar compound systems?

Yes I know I could pay a lad to do it but, time is the essence. Also quality is the main issue. I do not want the pointing to break up in 18 months or so.

I also do not want to just sweep the mortar into the joints, like on GroundForce.....!!

What do the big companies use?

Stuart

Polymeric jointing compounds are, in my opinion anyway, a much cleaner finish than normal mortar joints. The joints are still hand struck once the compound is brushed in to give the 'crisp' look and the pointing will actually last longer than a normal mortar. For setts a mortar system is used although this can also be employed on wet days for slabs. Believe me if mortar looks as good as our finished joints we would use it but quite simply the RIGHT polymeric is worth its weight in gold - and not just because it saves a backbreaking day either

Hi Stuart, When it comes to pointing, I have seen some well known companies just brush and tap in a dry mix!!! This method has also been shown on rogue traders!!! yeeee ha! We always wet point...very labour intensive, but worth it. I haven't yet used any jointing compound systems...I suppose they would be useful for pointing up rows of setts....but when it comes to paving you would want to see nice clean and smooth joints. Also, if you look at how well interior floors are finished...often to a very high standard...the outside should be no different. Clive.

Have emailed the company, Gordon Cook, for further information.
Was anything else at the show of interest?

We use a product called vp840 imaginatively enough from a company called NCC Streetscape. It is a polymeric sand which does have to be brushed into the joints but gives an extremely clean finish and is extremely resilient once it has gone off. The only issue is you need a dry day to use it. They do have another pavement jointing mortar system too. Call them on 01257 266696. Their technical support is second to none. We met them in person last week and they are a great bunch of guys. I would recommend you give them a call as you won't regret it!
