Advertising. / CAD programs

I am a relativly new business of just over a year and half. I have advertised in yellow pages and local parish magazine's and am about to do yell****

I live in to the east of Carlisle , It has been a struggle getting the message across to the public exactly what i provide , i get 20 calls asking me to come and cut grass for every one for outdoor building. I have been working on my ******* which will be online again soon.

Can anyone recommend any further advertising avenues to follow or investigate. I thought about the Local Cumbria magazine (Middle class kitchens etc etc , you know the type) but the costs were horrendous.

Any advice would be apreciated.

Also what computer based CAD design programs are people using , I have a pc and a mac .

Mathew (sick of getting asked to "put block pavers down just like next door")

I find it helpful to put my *** address on everything - you will start to get more focussed calls then as people will often look at your ***site first. However the irrelevant calls can't be stopped entirely! I am a garden designer and get calls to put up fencing, cut lawns etc. Make friends with people who do offer these services and then you can help both parties when an irrelevant call comes in. When you help others they may help you back in the future. Even if they don't it is satisfying to know that you did your best to help.

I agree with peonies, word of mouth is best and will happen if your work is consistantly excellent! The magazine is a good idea, we started in similar last year and it work has gone mad. Make friends with the advertising person you speak to, in our experience deals can be done on rates!

Hang on in there, even if it does mean doing block paving for the street. The quality of your workmanship is advertising in its own right!!! Word of mouth is by far the best advertising and cuts out a lot of pricing for no return. Try architects and estate agents - first job may be a tidy up but its a foot in the door. We've been in business for 21 years and after intitial advertising have done very little. The free listing in yellow pages brought in more work than the large advert. We are in the process of 'growing ' the business and are about to advertise locally and I just know from experience that will mean a lot of time spent on PR and pricing for no return in order to get the 'one' you want. We are also in the process of linking up with free listing via ******* but since the ******* itself is a new venture I don't know where that will lead. Good Luck.
