thoughts on doing a show garden

Well have just done my first rhs flower show,  and what an eyeopener alt. I  worked with a friend on a small uban garden at chelsea and we got a silver medal so we are well chuffed but the best bit was talking to the public and evesdropping on thier comments alt.

The surpriseing bit was how many plants it took to fill the small space we had. It was staggering and I lost count I even thought at one stage that Ihad overordered as well but they all disappered in to the planting.

I have been asked  would I do it again ? mmmm chelsea i do not know, I am doing one at the Swindon Garden Show in September i suppose i have got the bug for it now.

HI Guys thanks for the comments

it was the quilted velvet garden, and i delt with all the planting aspects of doing the garden and that was a big headache particulary as some of the plants failed to arrive ehehehe a small problem that was overcome

we were told that the judges felt the standard was high for the small garden catagory this year

as for the nerves side well flowers failing to flower and things flowering too early and hopeing that they did not go over too much, but having said that I made a point of showing plants in thier natural state so if the flowered in the autumn then they did not have flowers on so very un chelsea but the public seamed to like that aspect of the garden

Hi Peter
Was it the Quilted Velvet garden? I remember seeing it and thought it was great. It was my first time at Chelsea this year but it won't be the last. I loved it and came away with so many ideas. Congratulations on your silver - you must be really pleased after all your hard work.
I love this website -i'd never have thought this time last week that I would be emailing a Chelsea medal winner!

Congratulations on the silver - which one was yours? We may have chatted! I'm fascinated by show gardens. I spent another long day at chelsea and came away with tons of notes and sketches and went through two camera batteries. I thought that the small gardens were generally more original than most of the show gardens, but the standard was generally high - unlike at Malvern which, with a couple of notable exceptions, was dreadful. I'm working towards full membership of the SGD this year and then perhaps will enter some of the design competitions. I'm just not interested in all the hassle of chasing sponsorship - if someone comes to me, that's different. How did your funding come about? Let me know if you get a chance.Well done again.
